“This is my favorite place in New York City. No, in the whole universe…This angel. She’s my favorite angel. I like them best when they’re statuary. They commemorate death but they suggest a world without dying. They are made of the heaviest things on earth, stone and iron, they weigh tons but they’re winged, they are engines and instruments of flight. This is the angel Bethesda.” —Tony Kushner, “Angels In America”

Shakespeare Garden
Central Park, New York
I was walking through Central Park with a playwright friend when I remembered we were close to a garden I had always wanted to visit, the Shakespeare Garden. Author Helene Hanff had written about the garden in her “Letters from New York” for the BBC Women’s Hour radio broadcasts. She wrote about its history, how she loved walking through this beautiful garden, how the flowers came from Shakespeare’s home garden or were mentioned in his works; how it fell into disrepair and decay, and later, how she helped to restore it.
I had never been before, so we decided to look for it. Behind the Swedish Marionette Theatre, just below Belvedere Castle, sits the garden. It looks small and unassuming, but it was larger than it first appeared. There were twists and turns and walks you uphill. Nestled between bunches of flowers are plaques bearing quotes from Shakespeare’s plays. It was so lovely.
